Rosebud's sole album was an eclectic but erratic raycarsimpsicaperranavitytyre.xyzinfo veered between psychedelic-tinged, poetic tracks reminiscent of Henske-Yester's Farewell Aldebaran ("Le Soleil," "Lullabye II (Summer Carol)," "Lorelei"), ornately orchestrated, tuneful art-pop ("Flying to Morning"), pedestrian-period L.A. singer-songwriter music, and country-rock.

I know a clean way out, the vandals made it low The day so lean, the nighttime slips in a song There was a shot way out, down past Varina I burn my bed and run naked in the Winter Well oh well, the pines are getting to me, consider my life, I'm wild but I'm not free By all accounts it was a heavy snow Brown is black by contrast I'm aglow I hear.

The last Rosebuds release, "Night Of The Furies," seemed like such a departure, and "Life Like" seems an even further departure from "Furies." It would be tempting to label "Life Like" a "return to form" or "back to basics" record, and indeed the most obvious change from their last album is that virtually all the electronic drums, beats and atmospheres have been trimmed away/5(4).

On their fourth full-length album, Life Like, the Rosebuds take a step back from the nearly overwhelming gothic darkness of Night of the Furies and return to a sound and feel reminiscent of their first album and EP. Not that the lyrics suddenly became all sweetness and light, they are still delving into gloomy matters and tackling murky emotions with abstract and poetic language.7/

LIFE LIKE is considerably less 80s, Smithsy, and WHAM!-ish than NIGHT OF THE FURIES, and far more in the vein of so much North American indie/art rock of the first half of this decade. It's an adjustment to the ears and the expectations, but The Rosebuds manage to deliver the goods even in light of the stylistic switch-ups.
