Connecticut band Apse made their way to the All Tomorrows Parties label having produced a number of self-released EPs and one more formal outing for Acuarela. This splendid full-length captures the band in brooding, ominous form, shifting from the Slint-like 'From The North' to suspenseful post-rock passages on 'Blackwood Gates'. There's a bluesy undercurrent running through this record too.

Hovering in the shadows comes Apse's Spirit, a mesmerizing album where the shrouded world of Gothic gloom meets the outer stratosphere of space raycarsimpsicaperranavitytyre.xyzinfogh laced with vocals and haunted by moody melodies, the 11 tracks within are less songs than instrumentals interconnected by their melodies, rhythms, and thick atmospheres.8/

It's true that Spirit were a very album-oriented band, one that might best be experienced through albums rather than compilations. If a compilation's good enough for you, this is a good one to get. Granted, the band's mere handful of well-known songs are gotten out of the way right away ("," "Mechanical World," "Nature's Way," "Animal Zoo," "Fresh-Garbage," "I Got a Line on You").
