Violator is definitely the Depeche Mode album that you must have, but they're one of those rare bands that managed to reach such a level of perfectness twice, and Black Celebration is definitely number two in my book. Here, Depeche Mode took their already sophisticated synth sound on Some Great Reward and added more doses of doom and gloom for something that managed to be even better.

Black Celebration on The Best Of Depeche Mode Vol. 1? Does anyone else find it very odd that there isn't a single song from Black Celebration on The Best Of Depeche Mode Volume 1? It seems to me like either Black Celebration or Stripped should be on it, probably their most popular tracks from the album.

Whether the band felt it was simply the time to move on from its most explicit industrial-pop fusion days, or whether increased success and concurrently larger venues pushed the music into different avenues, Depeche Mode's fifth studio album, Black Celebration, saw the group embarking on a path that in many ways defined their sound to the present: emotionally extreme lyrics matched with amped.
