How can you believe in salvation by faith alone when James seems to say that salvation is not by faith alone? Why do so many people believe in salvation by works? How are good works the result of salvation? What is the relationship of faith, works, and security in salvation? Do we contribute anything good to our own salvation?

God and Jesus made salvation possible. They are the first and the last, the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end of our salvation. They are the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews ; Revelations ). Salvation was “only” possible because of their planning, their love, and their sacrifice.

The second part of your sentence says that the salvation itself is contributed to by the works themselves.

We do not deserve salvation. Salvation is God's gift (Ephesians , 8) which comes to us only though the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts ). We receive salvation by the gift of faith imparted to us as a gift (Ephesians ), by hearing the "good news" of the gospel of salvation (Ephesians ) and believing it.
